A detailed 1817 lithograph by Hippolyte Lecomte depicting a French artillery unit in a quiet, wooded encampment.
This lithograph, titled La pièce en batterie, captures a moment of military preparation during the early nineteenth century. Hippolyte Lecomte, a French painter and lithographer, produced this work in 1817. The composition depicts a field artillery unit positioned within a wooded, rocky terrain. A cannon is set for action, while soldiers attend to their duties nearby. One soldier stands guard by the weapon, and others rest against the base of a large tree, their packs and rifles gathered close. A horse, tethered near the rock face, completes the scene of a temporary encampment.
Lecomte was known for his precise documentation of military life and uniforms. His work often reflects the technical interest in lithography that emerged in France during this period. The medium allows for a range of tonal values, which the artist uses to define the textures of the bark, the rocky outcrop, and the fabric of the soldiers' uniforms. The scene is quiet, focusing on the mundane aspects of military service rather than the chaos of active combat. The trees frame the composition, drawing the eye toward the central artillery piece.
This print provides a glimpse into the aesthetic and thematic concerns of post-Napoleonic French art. The attention to detail in the equipment and the naturalistic rendering of the environment reflect a broader interest in historical accuracy. Lecomte collaborated with other artists of his time, and this specific piece demonstrates the collaborative nature of print production in early nineteenth-century Paris. The work is a clear example of the military genre, which remained popular among collectors who valued the depiction of soldiers in their daily routines. It remains a useful reference for those interested in the material culture of the period.
