A serene, atmospheric depiction of the Nativity by French Neo-Impressionist Maximilien Luce, set within the rural surroundings of Rolleboise.
Maximilien Luce, a painter associated with the Neo-Impressionist movement, produced this interpretation of the Nativity during his later years in Rolleboise. Unlike his earlier urban scenes or industrial subjects, this work adopts a quieter, more traditional narrative focus. The composition centres on the holy family within a rustic, barn-like structure, reflecting the rural environment of the Seine valley where the artist resided.
The scene is illuminated by a soft, ethereal light emanating from the infant, which contrasts with the muted, earthy tones of the surrounding architecture and the nocturnal sky. Luce employs a technique that prioritises atmospheric effect over rigid pointillist dots, allowing for a softer blending of colour. The figures are rendered with a sense of humility, grounded in the everyday reality of rural life rather than idealised religious iconography. A dog stands to the right, adding a domestic element to the scene, while the moon hangs in the upper sky, providing a cool, pale light that balances the warmth of the central glow.
Luce often turned his attention to the lives of ordinary people, and here he translates a biblical theme into a local, pastoral context. The brushwork is deliberate, capturing the texture of the wooden structure and the dry, uneven ground. This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to shift his stylistic approach while maintaining his interest in the interplay of light and shadow. It remains a curious example of his late-career output, where personal reflection and regional surroundings informed his choice of subject matter.
