A detailed 1854 etching by Charles Meryon depicting the old Paris morgue on the Île de la Cité, capturing the sombre atmosphere of mid-nineteenth-century urban life.
Charles Meryon produced La morgue in 1854 as part of his series Eaux-fortes sur Paris. This etching depicts the old Paris morgue, situated on the Île de la Cité, near the Quai du Marché-Neuf. The composition captures a grim scene: a crowd gathers on the embankment to observe the recovery of a body from the Seine, while smoke rises from nearby chimneys, adding to the atmosphere of industrial decay and urban melancholy.
Meryon employed a precise, linear technique to render the architectural details of the buildings. The heavy, dark lines define the stone masonry and the stark shadows cast across the quay. His approach to the subject is detached yet observant, focusing on the physical reality of the city rather than romanticising its appearance. The inclusion of figures in the foreground and on the bridge provides a sense of scale and human presence within the imposing urban environment.
This work reflects the artist's preoccupation with the transformation of Paris during the mid-nineteenth century. Meryon often documented structures that were slated for demolition or renovation, preserving their appearance through his meticulous printmaking process. The etching demonstrates his ability to balance technical control with a sombre, evocative mood. The stark contrast between the light-coloured stone walls and the dark, textured sky creates a visual tension that draws the viewer into the scene. By focusing on a site of public mourning and death, Meryon presents a view of the city that is both historical and deeply personal, capturing a specific moment in the life of Paris before the extensive urban renewal projects of the Second Empire.
