A Neo-Impressionist study by Maximilien Luce, capturing the industrial construction of the Sacré-Coeur basilica in late nineteenth-century Paris.
Maximilien Luce, a prominent figure within the Neo-Impressionist circle, captures the industrial transformation of Paris in this depiction of the Sacré-Coeur construction site. Painted around 1889, the work focuses on the scaffolding and mechanical apparatus required to raise the basilica, rather than the religious monument itself. Luce employs a methodical application of paint, characteristic of his engagement with pointillist techniques, to render the structural geometry of the wooden frames and the iron crane against the hazy, sprawling cityscape of Paris below.
The composition is divided between the foreground, occupied by the skeletal timber structures and workers, and the background, where the city dissolves into a soft, atmospheric blur. The contrast between the warm, ochre tones of the scaffolding and the cool, pale blues of the distant urban expanse creates a sense of depth. Luce was known for his interest in the working class and the physical labour involved in the modernisation of the capital. By choosing to document the construction process, he provides a record of the city in flux, moving away from the traditional picturesque views of Paris favoured by his contemporaries.
This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to balance technical precision with a keen observation of light and colour. The brushwork remains visible, contributing to the texture of the surface and the overall sense of movement within the scene. The inclusion of figures on the scaffolding adds a human element to the industrial setting, grounding the massive scale of the construction project in the reality of daily labour. This print offers an opportunity to observe the intersection of urban development and artistic experimentation during the late nineteenth century.
