Gustave Loiseau, a painter associated with the Post-Impressionist movement, frequently turned his attention to the rugged coastlines of Brittany and Normandy. In this work, La Banche, he captures a specific rock formation rising from the sea. The composition relies on the contrast between the solid, textured mass of the cliff and the fluid, rhythmic movement of the water.

Loiseau employs a technique known as cross-hatching, or the 'trellis' method, where short, overlapping brushstrokes create a sense of vibration across the surface of the canvas. This approach allows him to build up colour in layers, giving the cliff face a tactile quality that suggests the rough, weathered stone.
