A classic Dutch Italianate scene by Willem Romeyn, depicting a herd of livestock resting near a stone fountain in a warm, golden light.
Willem Romeyn was a prominent member of the Dutch Italianate painters, a group of artists who travelled to Italy and returned to the Netherlands with a fascination for the Mediterranean light and classical ruins. This work, Kudde bij een fontein, captures a quiet moment of rest for a herd of livestock near a stone fountain. The composition is typical of Romeyn's output, featuring a mix of cattle, goats, and pack animals gathered in a sun-drenched, open space.
The scene is defined by a warm, golden-brown palette that suggests the heat of a southern climate. To the left, a weathered stone monument stands as a reminder of classical antiquity, providing a structural anchor for the composition. The animals are rendered with careful attention to their individual forms and textures, while the figure of a herdsman stands near the fountain, observing the group. The background opens into a hazy, atmospheric distance, characteristic of the Italianate style which sought to replicate the specific quality of light found in the Roman Campagna.
Romeyn, who was a pupil of Nicolaes Berchem, adopted the refined brushwork and balanced compositions of his teacher. His work often focuses on the daily life of travellers and herdsmen, placing them within an idealised, serene environment. The painting avoids dramatic narrative, instead offering a study of light, texture, and the quiet interaction between humans and animals. The muted tones and soft transitions between the foreground and the horizon create a sense of stillness, inviting the viewer to observe the details of the animals and the surrounding architecture. This piece is a representative example of the seventeenth-century Dutch interest in foreign, sun-lit scenes, which provided a contrast to the often grey and damp climate of the Netherlands.
