This hand-coloured woodcut depicts the Crucifixion of Christ, a subject central to Northern Renaissance devotional literature. Attributed to the Dutch printer and woodcutter Doen Pietersz., the work exhibits the characteristic linear style of early sixteenth-century book illustration. The composition focuses on the physical act of nailing Christ to the cross, with figures surrounding the central event in a manner typical of contemporary passion narratives.
The artist employs a direct, graphic approach to the scene. The figures are rendered with heavy outlines, which define their forms against the hatched background. The application of colour, likely added by hand after the initial printing, provides a clear distinction between the garments of the soldiers and the figures of the mourners. The perspective is relatively flat, prioritising the narrative clarity of the event over spatial depth. This approach was common in printed books of the period, where the image functioned as a visual aid for the reader to contemplate the suffering of Christ.
Doen Pietersz. was active in Amsterdam during the early decades of the sixteenth century. His output often included religious texts and illustrated volumes that circulated among a growing audience of literate urban dwellers. The inclusion of the monogram at the bottom left confirms the attribution to his workshop. The work remains a clear example of the functional, didactic nature of early modern printmaking, where the primary goal was the dissemination of religious imagery in an accessible format. The survival of such prints within their original bindings offers a glimpse into the material culture of the period, showing how these small-scale illustrations were integrated into the daily devotional practices of the time.
