A fine art print of an 18th-century Pahari miniature painting depicting the mythological encounter between Krishna and the serpent Kaliya.
This miniature painting originates from the Pahari region of northern India, specifically within the Guler-Kangra tradition. It belongs to a series illustrating the Bhagavata Purana, a Sanskrit text detailing the life of Krishna. The composition follows the stylistic developments established by the master painters Manaku and Nainsukh, whose influence shaped the aesthetic of the Punjab Hills during the late 18th century.
The scene depicts a narrative episode where Krishna confronts the multi-headed serpent Kaliya. The artist employs a flattened perspective, common in Pahari works, to organise the various figures and topographical elements across the pictorial plane. The palette relies on soft, earthy tones for the rocky outcrops and vegetation, contrasted by the precise application of pigment to define the figures. The figures are rendered with delicate outlines, a hallmark of the Guler school, which prioritised clarity and narrative flow over realistic depth.
In the foreground, the river Yamuna is depicted with stylised ripples, while the surrounding hills are structured in rhythmic, undulating forms. The inclusion of architectural details, such as the small structures nestled within the hills, provides a sense of place. The work demonstrates the technical precision of the period, with fine brushwork used to delineate the features of the monkeys and the divine form of Krishna. The border, decorated with a repeating floral motif, frames the central action, maintaining the focus on the mythological event. This piece reflects the refined approach to manuscript illustration that defined the artistic output of the region during this era, balancing narrative clarity with a decorative sensibility.
