This work is a folio from a Bhagavata Purana series, a text central to the Vaishnava tradition. Attributed to the artist Sa Nana, the painting depicts a narrative sequence from the life of Krishna. The composition is divided into two distinct registers, a common device in Indian miniature painting to convey temporal progression or simultaneous events within a single frame.

The upper register shows a procession of figures carrying palanquins, their movement directed towards the right. The lower register features Krishna, identifiable by his blue skin, seated alongside a maiden in a chariot drawn by horses and accompanied by elephants. The figures are rendered with the characteristic profile views and expressive gestures typical of the Pahari school. The use of colour is bold, with deep reds, ochres, and blues creating a clear separation between the figures and the background.

Sa Nana employs a flattened perspective, prioritising the clarity of the narrative over spatial realism. The architectural elements, such as the arched canopies in the upper section, provide a rhythmic structure to the scene. The figures are adorned in traditional attire, with attention given to the patterns on their garments and the trappings of the animals. The paper surface shows signs of age, with the original pigments retaining their saturation despite the passage of time. This piece offers a view into the artistic conventions of the late eighteenth-century Punjab Hills, where courtly patronage supported the production of such devotional manuscripts.
