A detailed study of a ram's head by Dutch artist Hendrik Stokvisch, rendered in black and white chalk with focus on anatomical form and texture.
This study by the Dutch artist Hendrik Stokvisch captures the head of a ram with directness and technical precision. Stokvisch, active during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, produced a significant body of work focused on animal subjects. His approach to this drawing demonstrates a clear understanding of anatomical form, using chalk to define the heavy, curled horns and the dense texture of the animal's fleece.
The composition is centred, placing the ram in a frontal position that engages the viewer. Stokvisch employs varying pressure with his chalk to create depth, moving from the soft, blurred lines of the background to the firmer, darker strokes that define the facial features and the structure of the horns. The use of light and shadow is restrained, relying on the natural tone of the paper to provide mid-tones, while the black chalk provides the necessary contrast to model the volume of the head.
Such studies were common in the period, often serving as preparatory work for larger compositions or as independent exercises in observation. The artist avoids unnecessary ornamentation, choosing instead to focus on the physical reality of the subject. The result is a work that conveys the character of the animal through careful observation rather than idealisation. The drawing reflects the broader interest in natural history and rural life that occupied many artists of the Dutch school during this era. By stripping away the surroundings, Stokvisch ensures that the viewer's attention remains fixed on the form and texture of the ram, making this a fine example of his draftsmanship and his ability to render animal anatomy with clarity and purpose.
