An eighteenth-century etching depicting a temporary decorative monument on the Nieuwmarkt in Amsterdam, celebrating Dutch trade and maritime history.
This work by Noach van der Meer (II) depicts a temporary decorative structure erected on the Nieuwmarkt in Amsterdam in 1795. The composition centres on a model ship resting upon a plinth, which is adorned with a relief panel showing maritime activity. Flanking the central pedestal are two smaller columns, each topped with oval medallions featuring profile portraits and surrounded by military or civic trophies. The entire arrangement reflects the visual language of late eighteenth-century Dutch public celebrations, where temporary architecture was used to convey political and economic ideals.
The print employs a clean, linear style characteristic of the period, with delicate etching providing the structural framework and subtle watercolour washes adding definition to the flags, the ship, and the marble-effect base. The inclusion of the title, 'Koophandel en Zeevaart' (Trade and Navigation), identifies the thematic focus of the installation, which celebrated the maritime heritage of the Netherlands during a period of significant political transition. The work serves as a record of ephemeral urban design, capturing the specific aesthetic of civic displays in Amsterdam at the end of the eighteenth century.
Noach van der Meer (II) was a Dutch engraver known for his documentation of contemporary events and architectural subjects. His work often provides a clear, objective view of the urban environment, making this piece a valuable historical document. The balanced, symmetrical composition and the restrained use of colour are typical of the Neoclassical influence on Dutch graphic arts during this era. This print offers a glimpse into the public life of Amsterdam, documenting the intersection of civic pride, commercial identity, and the tradition of temporary street decorations.
