A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, depicting the Kiyotaki Kannon waterfall and a village path along the Tōkaidō road.
This woodblock print is part of the series A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces, produced by Katsushika Hokusai during the 1830s. The composition depicts the Kiyotaki Kannon waterfall, located near the Sakanoshita station on the Tōkaidō road. Hokusai employs a vertical orientation to emphasise the height of the cliff face, from which the water descends in distinct, ribbon-like streams. The artist uses a stylised approach to the water, contrasting the fluid motion of the falls with the solid, textured forms of the surrounding rock and vegetation.
In the foreground, the thatched roofs of a village provide a sense of scale and human presence. Figures are shown ascending a steep path carved into the cliff, leading towards the shrine associated with the waterfall. The colour palette relies on the use of Prussian blue, a pigment that became accessible to Japanese printmakers during this period, alongside earthy yellows and greens. The print demonstrates Hokusai's interest in the interaction between human activity and the natural environment. The sharp, clean lines of the woodblock technique define the contours of the landscape, while the flat application of colour maintains the graphic quality characteristic of the Ukiyo-e tradition.
