A sixteenth-century woodcut by Peter Flötner depicting a formal audience between a king and a standing subject, rendered with precise linear detail.
This woodcut by Peter Flötner depicts a formal encounter between a monarch and a subject. The king sits upon an ornate throne, holding a sceptre and an orb, which are traditional symbols of royal authority. He wears a crown and a heavy mantle, suggesting his status. Opposite him stands a man in contemporary sixteenth-century attire, gesturing as if in mid-conversation. A small dog rests on the tiled floor in the foreground, providing a domestic detail that contrasts with the formal nature of the meeting.
Flötner was a versatile artist based in Nuremberg, known for his work in sculpture, goldsmithing, and printmaking. His graphic works often display a clear, linear quality suited to the woodcut medium. The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged to create a sense of spatial depth despite the two-dimensional nature of the print. The architectural setting, featuring a rounded arch behind the throne, provides a structured backdrop for the interaction. The cross-hatching and parallel lines used to define the shadows and textures demonstrate the technical precision typical of German printmaking during this period.
This work reflects the interest in narrative and courtly themes common in the sixteenth century. The artist employs a clean, descriptive style that focuses on the clarity of the figures and their interaction. The print is a fine example of the small-scale woodcuts produced for a wider audience, often used as book illustrations or individual collector pieces. The stark contrast between the black ink and the paper surface emphasises the graphic quality of the design, making it a distinct piece of Northern Renaissance art.
