A dramatic historical painting by Bertalan Székely depicting a tense encounter between King László V and Ulrik Cillei in a richly detailed interior.
Bertalan Székely, a central figure in 19th-century Hungarian art, produced this historical composition in 1870. The work captures a tense moment involving King László V and his regent, Ulrik Cillei. Székely was known for his dedication to national history, often selecting subjects that reflected the political and social struggles of the Hungarian past. His approach to historical painting combined academic rigour with a dramatic, theatrical sensibility.
The scene is set within a dimly lit, opulent interior. To the left, the young King László V sits with Ulrik Cillei, their postures suggesting a private, conspiratorial discussion. The heavy drapery and dark wood panelling create a claustrophobic atmosphere, typical of the period's interest in historical authenticity and psychological tension. In the background, a group of figures, including a dancer, provides a stark contrast to the gravity of the central interaction. The lighting is focused, drawing the eye toward the king and his regent while leaving the periphery in shadow.
Székely employs a warm, earthy palette dominated by deep reds, browns, and ochres. The textures of the velvet garments and the wooden furniture are rendered with precision, demonstrating the artist's technical skill. The composition is structured to guide the viewer through the narrative, from the intimate conversation on the left to the more fluid, active figures on the right. This work remains a representative example of the Hungarian Romantic tradition, where historical accuracy meets emotive storytelling. The painting invites the viewer to consider the weight of power and the fragility of political alliances in the medieval Hungarian court.
