A detailed 1890 watercolour by Jan de Jong depicting figures gathered before the south portal of the Stevenskerk in Nijmegen.
This watercolour by Jan de Jong, dated 1890, captures a scene outside the Stevenskerk in Nijmegen. The composition focuses on the south portal of the church, a prominent Gothic structure that dominates the frame. De Jong employs a muted palette of greys, browns, and soft ochres to render the weathered stone of the architecture and the damp, cobblestone street. The artist demonstrates a keen eye for atmospheric conditions, using washes to suggest the diffused light of a typical Dutch day.
In the foreground, a group of churchgoers is depicted in period attire. Their presence provides a sense of scale against the towering portal. A figure sits on the ground to the right, perhaps a beggar or a weary traveller, adding a narrative element to the architectural study. The figures are painted with loose, expressive brushwork, contrasting with the more controlled lines used for the stone arches and buttresses. The artist captures the texture of the masonry, showing signs of age and exposure to the elements.
De Jong was active during the late nineteenth century, a period when Dutch artists often looked to their national heritage and historic urban centres for inspiration. This work reflects an interest in the preservation of local character and the quiet rhythms of daily life. The perspective draws the viewer into the narrow street, creating a sense of depth that leads the eye toward the shadowed recesses of the portal. The work is signed and dated in the lower right corner, confirming its provenance as a finished study from the artist's hand. It remains a fine example of late nineteenth-century Dutch watercolour practice, balancing technical precision in architectural rendering with the fluid, spontaneous qualities inherent to the medium.
