A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting travellers crossing the Rokugo River at Kawasaki, from the Gyosho Tokaido series.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the bustling activity at the Rokugo ferry crossing in Kawasaki. It belongs to the Gyosho Tokaido series, a collection of fifty-five prints documenting the route between Edo and Kyoto. Hiroshige captures the daily rhythm of travellers navigating the river, with passengers huddled under conical hats in small wooden boats. The composition balances the human activity in the foreground with the calm, expansive water and distant tree-lined banks.
The artist employs a clear, graphic style characteristic of the period. The water is rendered with rhythmic, horizontal lines that suggest movement, while the trees are depicted with solid blocks of colour. A single sail appears in the distance, providing a sense of scale and depth to the scene. The colour palette is restrained, relying on shades of blue for the water and sky, complemented by the muted tones of the boats and the foliage. The print features the series title in a cartouche at the top right, alongside the specific location name.
Hiroshige is known for his ability to convey atmosphere and the specific conditions of travel in nineteenth-century Japan. This work avoids excessive detail, focusing instead on the clarity of the scene and the quiet observation of everyday life. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, where each colour is applied via a separate carved block. The result is a balanced image that captures a moment of transit along the Tokaido road. This particular series, the Gyosho Tokaido, is noted for its slightly smaller format and more intimate approach compared to his earlier, more famous series of the same route. It remains a clear example of the Ukiyo-e tradition, documenting the geography and social habits of the era.
