A detailed topographical ink and wash drawing by Jacobus Stellingwerff, documenting the appearance of Kasteel Gansoyen near Heusden in 1651.
This drawing by Jacobus Stellingwerff depicts Kasteel Gansoyen, a fortified residence near Heusden, as it appeared in 1651. Stellingwerff was a prolific Dutch draughtsman known for his extensive documentation of castles, churches, and manor houses across the Netherlands. His work provides a valuable visual record of architectural structures that have since been altered or destroyed.
The composition is characteristic of seventeenth-century topographical studies. The artist employs a clear, linear approach to define the stone walls, the drawbridge, and the twin towers topped with cupolas. The use of ink wash creates subtle shadows, giving the structure a sense of mass and volume against the surrounding foliage. The drawing is framed by a simple border, and the artist has included a descriptive inscription at the base, identifying the location and the year of the original site conditions.
Stellingwerff often worked from earlier sketches or historical records to compile his topographical surveys. This piece captures the defensive nature of the castle, with its moat and narrow entrance, while maintaining a balanced, observational perspective. The foliage is rendered with quick, rhythmic pen strokes, providing a contrast to the solid, static geometry of the building. This print offers a glimpse into the Dutch tradition of recording the built environment, where precision and clarity were prioritised to preserve the appearance of regional heritage for future study. The muted palette and focus on architectural detail make it a suitable choice for those interested in historical cartography, Dutch history, or the evolution of European fortification design.
