A detailed eighteenth-century portrait miniature of Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, painted by Gerrit Kamphuysen in 1763.
This portrait miniature depicts Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand, the Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, captured in 1763. The work is executed in watercolour on ivory, a medium that allowed artists of the eighteenth century to achieve remarkable detail within a small format. The Duke is presented in a three-quarter view, wearing a light-coloured coat adorned with a prominent blue sash and a star of an order, which signifies his high rank and military status. His powdered wig and formal attire reflect the fashion of the European aristocracy during the mid-eighteenth century.
Gerrit Kamphuysen, a Dutch artist known for his skill in miniature painting, employs a delicate touch to render the Duke's features. The soft modelling of the face and the precise application of pigment demonstrate the technical rigour required for this scale of work. The background is a neutral, stippled tone, which ensures that the focus remains entirely on the subject. The oval composition is typical of the period, designed to be held in the hand or worn as a personal memento.
Miniatures such as this were often commissioned as diplomatic gifts or tokens of affection between members of the nobility. The inclusion of the Duke's specific regalia provides a clear indication of his identity and the political context of the era. By examining the brushwork and the subtle colour palette, one can appreciate the restraint and precision that defined the portraiture of the time. This print captures the original's fine detail, offering a glimpse into the formal portrait traditions of the eighteenth-century European court.
