A woodblock print from the 1772 Kan'yōsai gafu by Tatebe Ayatari, featuring waterfowl rendered in the expressive Nanga style.
This woodblock print originates from the Kan'yōsai gafu, a collection of works by the Japanese artist and poet Tatebe Ayatari, who worked under the pseudonym Kan'yōsai. Published in 1772, the album reflects the artist's engagement with the Nanga or Bunjinga tradition, which drew inspiration from Chinese literati painting styles.
The image depicts a pair of waterfowl navigating water, rendered with a focus on calligraphic line and tonal variation. The artist employs a restrained palette, relying on the contrast between the dark ink of the birds and the lighter, abstracted waves of the water. The composition spans two pages, creating a sense of movement as the birds glide across the surface. The lines defining the feathers and the ripples of the water demonstrate a mastery of the woodblock medium, where the pressure and carving depth dictate the final visual weight.
Tatebe Ayatari was a multifaceted figure in the cultural life of eighteenth-century Japan. Beyond his visual art, he was a noted haikai poet and novelist. His approach to painting often prioritised expressive brushwork over strict realism, a characteristic trait of the literati style. The Kan'yōsai gafu serves as a record of his aesthetic sensibilities, combining traditional motifs with a personal, somewhat idiosyncratic touch. The print captures a quiet moment in nature, stripped of unnecessary detail to focus on the essential forms of the subjects. The use of negative space and the rhythmic repetition of the wave patterns provide a sense of balance to the scene, typical of the period's graphic arts.
