This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts a domestic scene at a post station along the Tokaido road. Unlike the later, more famous series by Utagawa Hiroshige, which focused on the dramatic scenery of the route, Hokusai’s earlier interpretation of the Tokaido stations often prioritised the daily lives of the people inhabiting these spaces. In this composition, two women are engaged in manual labour, washing items in large basins within a simple, open-walled structure. A horse stands partially visible in the background, tethered near the wooden frame of the building. The print is executed with a restrained palette, typical of early nineteenth-century surimono or smaller-scale commercial prints, where subtle earth tones and muted greens dominate the visual field.
