This woodblock print is a plate from the celebrated series, Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road, published by Hoeido. Utagawa Hiroshige captures the third station, Kanagawa, which was a bustling post town overlooking the bay. The composition balances the quiet expanse of the water against the activity of the shoreline.

On the right, a row of teahouses lines the road, where figures are depicted in motion, some beckoning to travellers. The architecture is rendered with clean, precise lines, typical of the period. To the left, the bay stretches toward the horizon, punctuated by sailing vessels and small boats. The colour palette relies on soft gradients in the sky, transitioning from a pale yellow to a warm peach, which contrasts with the deep blues of the water.

Hiroshige was a master of atmospheric effects, and here he uses the medium to convey the specific quality of light at a coastal location. The print demonstrates his ability to organise complex scenes into a coherent visual narrative. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper left corner provides context for the series and the specific location, maintaining the traditional format of the ukiyo-e genre.
