Kameyama: Wind, Rain, and Thunder - Utagawa Hiroshige

A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, depicting travellers navigating a storm at the Kameyama station along the Tokaido road.

This woodblock print is the forty-seventh entry in the series Famous Sights of the Fifty-three Stations, often referred to as the Vertical Tokaido. Produced by Utagawa Hiroshige in 1855, the work depicts the post station of Kameyama during a severe storm. The composition utilises a steep, diagonal incline to guide the viewer towards the distant Kameyama Castle, which sits atop a hill shrouded in mist.

Hiroshige employs a distinct technique to render the weather conditions. Sharp, diagonal lines cut across the image to represent heavy rain, while the colour palette relies on deep blues and greys to convey the atmospheric pressure of the storm. The figures in the foreground, dressed in traditional straw rain capes and hats, lean into the wind as they navigate the path. Their posture communicates the physical difficulty of travel in such conditions.

The print demonstrates the artist's mastery of atmospheric perspective and his ability to capture transient weather phenomena. Unlike his earlier horizontal Tokaido series, this vertical format allows for a greater emphasis on the height of the terrain and the verticality of the falling rain. The contrast between the solid, dark forms of the trees and the ephemeral nature of the storm creates a sense of movement. This work remains a primary example of the late Edo period woodblock print tradition, where the focus shifted towards more dramatic, emotive depictions of the Japanese countryside.
