A striking Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Hasegawa Sadanobu, capturing the theatrical intensity of Kabuki actor Onoe Kikugorō III as a spectral courtesan.
This woodblock print by Hasegawa Sadanobu depicts the celebrated Kabuki actor Onoe Kikugorō III in the role of the spirit of the courtesan Yonakishii. Sadanobu, a prominent figure in the Kamigata school of printmaking based in Osaka, was known for his focus on the theatrical world of the Kansai region. Unlike the more stylised portraits often produced in Edo, the Kamigata style frequently prioritised a realistic rendering of the actor's features and a specific attention to the atmosphere of the stage performance.
The composition employs a dramatic use of negative space, with the figure emerging from a dark, atmospheric background that suggests the supernatural nature of the character. The actor wears a pale blue kimono, which contrasts with the deep, ink-heavy tones of the upper portion of the print. The hem of the garment features a decorative pattern of lotus flowers and geometric shapes, rendered with precision. Wisps of ethereal, flame-like energy surround the figure, a visual shorthand in Kabuki theatre to indicate a ghost or spirit. The vertical orientation and the inclusion of calligraphic text to the left of the figure are characteristic of the yakusha-e (actor print) genre, which served as both promotional material and a record of specific performances.
Sadanobu's work provides a window into the aesthetic preferences of the mid-nineteenth century. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who collaborated with the artist to achieve the subtle colour gradients, particularly in the transition from the dark background to the lighter foreground. This piece captures a moment of theatrical tension, freezing the actor's expressive posture for the viewer. It remains a representative example of the regional print traditions that flourished outside of the capital, offering a distinct perspective on the intersection of Japanese theatre and visual art.
