A detailed 1675 map of the Krimpenerwaard water board by Johannes Leupenius, featuring precise cartography and decorative heraldic elements.
This map, produced by Johannes Leupenius in 1675, represents the Hoogheemraadschap van de Krimpenerwaard, a water board authority in the Netherlands. The work is a significant example of seventeenth-century Dutch cartography, combining technical precision with the decorative conventions of the era. Leupenius, a surveyor and artist, was known for his ability to document the complex hydraulic infrastructure of the Dutch polder system.
The composition is structured around a central map of the Krimpenerwaard region, which delineates the boundaries of the polders and the water management network. The map is framed by elaborate heraldic displays, featuring the coats of arms of the various officials associated with the water board. These ornamental elements, rendered with fine line work, provide a visual record of the administrative hierarchy of the time. The use of cartouches and decorative flourishes is characteristic of the period, where maps functioned as both practical tools for land management and displays of civic authority.
Technically, the work demonstrates the high standard of Dutch engraving during the late seventeenth century. The lines are crisp and controlled, allowing for the clear identification of geographic features, waterways, and administrative divisions. The map provides a view into the historical geography of the region, showing how the land was organised and protected from flooding. It remains a valuable document for those interested in the history of Dutch water management and the development of cartographic techniques. The print captures the intersection of scientific survey and artistic expression, reflecting the Dutch preoccupation with land reclamation and the maintenance of the polders.
