A detailed eighteenth-century map of the Vier Noorder Koggen region in North Holland, featuring heraldic shields and precise geographical markings.
This print represents the upper-right section of a larger cartographic project detailing the Vier Noorder Koggen, a historic water board region in North Holland. Hendrik de Leth, a prominent Dutch engraver and publisher active in Amsterdam during the mid-eighteenth century, produced this work with the precision required for administrative and navigational utility. The map delineates the polder boundaries, waterways, and settlements near Medemblik, providing a clear view of the hydraulic engineering that defined the Dutch coastal region.
The composition is organised with a focus on geographical accuracy, yet it incorporates decorative elements characteristic of the period. At the top of the sheet, several heraldic shields represent the various administrative bodies responsible for the dykes and water management of the area. These coats of arms add a layer of institutional authority to the document. A compass rose is positioned on the right side, assisting in orientation, while the coastline is marked with subtle nautical details, including small vessels navigating the waters.
Technically, the work employs fine line engraving to distinguish between the various polders and drainage channels. The typography is clean and legible, typical of the high standards maintained by the De Leth publishing house. This map serves as a record of the physical and political geography of North Holland before the extensive land reclamation projects of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It is a piece of historical documentation that captures the relationship between the Dutch population and their managed environment. The print is presented here as a high-quality reproduction, maintaining the clarity of the original copperplate lines and the balanced layout of the cartographic information.
