An allegorical depiction of Justice by the Flemish master Frans Floris, featuring classical motifs and the dramatic lighting characteristic of Northern Mannerism.
This work by Frans Floris, a central figure in the Antwerp school during the sixteenth century, depicts an allegorical representation of Justice. Floris, who spent time in Italy, brought the influence of Roman Mannerism back to the Low Countries. His style is characterised by muscular figures, complex poses, and a specific approach to light that differentiates his work from the earlier Flemish tradition.
The composition features two figures engaged in a deliberate interaction. The seated figure, draped in dark, muted garments, holds a sceptre, a traditional symbol of authority and judicial power. The second figure, standing and leaning forward, wears a golden-yellow robe that provides a strong contrast to the darker tones of the seated subject. The interaction between the two suggests a narrative of guidance or the transmission of authority. In the background, a classical bust sits upon a plinth, reinforcing the connection to antiquity that was common in the intellectual circles of the period.
Floris was known for his large-scale history paintings, though his smaller works often display a similar attention to anatomical precision and dramatic lighting. The handling of the fabric, particularly the folds of the golden drapery, demonstrates the technical skill he developed through his study of Italian masters. The painting avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the physical presence of the figures and the symbolic weight of their gestures. This piece reflects the broader interest in humanism and classical allegory that permeated European art during the mid-sixteenth century, providing a clear example of the stylistic shift occurring in Antwerp at the time.
