A detailed hanging scroll painting of Jurōjin, the Japanese god of longevity, accompanied by a white deer beneath a pine tree.
This hanging scroll depicts Jurōjin, one of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japanese mythology, who represents longevity. Gan Ku, the founder of the Kishi school in Kyoto, demonstrates his technical precision in this work. The figure of the deity is rendered with careful attention to the folds of his robes and his weathered facial features, which suggest wisdom and age. He is accompanied by a white deer, a traditional symbol of long life and a common companion for this deity in East Asian iconography.
The composition balances the human figure with the natural elements surrounding him. A pine tree arches over the scene, its needles and branches providing a frame for the subject. The inclusion of plum blossoms suggests the transition of seasons, a common motif in Japanese painting. Gan Ku employs a restrained palette, relying on subtle washes of ink and muted earth tones to create depth and atmosphere. The brushwork is controlled, reflecting the artist's training and his ability to combine traditional Chinese painting techniques with the observational style that defined his career.
Gan Ku was active during the Edo period and gained recognition for his realistic depictions of animals, particularly tigers. In this work, his skill in animal portraiture is evident in the rendering of the deer. The silk support allows for delicate layering of pigment, which contributes to the soft, ethereal quality of the scene. This print captures the fine details of the original scroll, from the texture of the deity's staff to the subtle variations in the ink wash. It offers a view into the religious and cultural symbolism of the period, presenting a figure associated with health and prosperity through a lens of classical Japanese aesthetics.
