A detailed photochrom print by William Henry Jackson depicting the mineral-rich travertine formations of Jupiter Terrace in Yellowstone National Park.
This image captures the travertine formations of Jupiter Terrace at Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone National Park. Produced as a photochrom print, the work utilises a complex lithographic process that adds colour to a black-and-white photographic negative. William Henry Jackson, a photographer who documented the American West, provides a clear view of the mineral-rich terraces, which display distinct bands of white, ochre, and orange. These colours result from thermophilic bacteria and algae thriving in the mineral-laden water.
The composition balances the geological formations against the distant mountain range. In the foreground, evergreen trees frame the scene, providing a sense of scale. Two small figures stand atop the terrace, their presence emphasising the immense size of the geological feature. The sky remains a clear, pale blue, typical of the high-altitude atmosphere of the region. Jackson’s work was instrumental in the public perception of the American wilderness during the late nineteenth century. His photographs were widely distributed as postcards and prints, allowing those who could not travel to the frontier to view the natural wonders of the national parks.
The photochrom process creates a specific aesthetic, blending the precision of a camera with the soft, layered tones of a colour print. This particular view shows the terraces before significant changes occurred due to natural geological shifts. The print retains the original dark border, characteristic of the Detroit Photographic Company editions. It remains a record of the American West as it appeared during the late Victorian era, documenting both the natural environment and the early stages of tourism in the region.
