A fine art print of a mythological study by Francesco Primaticcio, depicting Juno in a dynamic, Mannerist composition rendered in ink and wash.
This work depicts the mythological scene of Juno, the queen of the gods, rousing Sleep to assist her in her schemes. Francesco Primaticcio, a central figure in the School of Fontainebleau, developed a distinct aesthetic characterised by elongated figures and fluid, graceful lines. This drawing reflects the Mannerist preoccupation with complex compositions and the human form in motion.
The scene features Juno as the central figure, her body captured in a dynamic, twisting pose that directs the viewer across the page. Beside her, the personification of Sleep is shown in a state of slumber, while various symbolic elements, including the peacock associated with Juno, populate the surrounding space. The use of brown ink and wash creates a sense of volume and depth, allowing the artist to model the musculature and drapery with precision. The composition is dense, with figures overlapping to create a sense of narrative urgency.
Primaticcio was instrumental in bringing Italian Renaissance techniques to the French court. His influence on the decorative arts and painting in France was considerable. This study demonstrates the technical facility required for large-scale mural projects, which were common in the royal chateaux of the period. The lines are calligraphic, showing the confidence of a master draughtsman who prioritised elegance and rhythmic movement over strict anatomical realism. The wash application provides a soft, atmospheric quality that unifies the disparate elements of the scene. This print captures the tonal nuances of the original ink and wash, preserving the delicate balance between the light-filled areas and the deeper shadows that define the figures. It is a representative example of the sophisticated, courtly art produced during the mid-sixteenth century in Europe.
