A refined stipple engraving of the industrialist Josiah Wedgwood, based on an original enamel portrait by George Stubbs.
This stipple engraving depicts the renowned potter and industrialist Josiah Wedgwood. George Stubbs, better known for his anatomical studies of horses, maintained a professional association with Wedgwood, who provided the artist with ceramic plaques for his experimental enamel paintings. This print is based on an original enamel portrait Stubbs produced of his patron.
The composition follows the conventions of eighteenth-century portraiture, presenting the sitter within a formal oval frame. The stipple technique, which uses dots rather than lines to create tonal variation, allows for a soft, painterly quality that mimics the appearance of the original enamel work. Wedgwood is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing a period-appropriate coat and cravat, with his gaze directed towards the viewer. The surrounding rectangular border provides a structured contrast to the rounded portrait, a common device in prints of this era to add a sense of depth and formality.
Stubbs was a meticulous observer of form, and this attention to detail is evident in the rendering of the sitter's features. The print captures the likeness of a man who was central to the British Industrial Revolution, reflecting the intellectual and commercial spirit of the late eighteenth century. The inscription at the base confirms the print was produced from an original life-sized enamel painting, noting the publication details in London. This work offers a glimpse into the intersection of fine art and industrial innovation during the Georgian period, documenting the appearance of one of Britain's most influential figures through the lens of a master painter and printmaker.
