A dramatic depiction of the biblical scene where Joseph flees the advances of Potiphar's wife, rendered in the theatrical style of French painter Nicolas Bertin.
This work depicts the biblical narrative of Joseph fleeing from the advances of Potiphar's wife. Nicolas Bertin, a French painter active during the transition from the late Baroque to the Rococo period, captures the dramatic tension of the encounter. Joseph is shown in a state of urgent retreat, his body angled away from the bed, while Potiphar's wife reaches out to grasp his garment. The composition relies on the contrast between the active, fleeing figure of Joseph and the reclining, insistent posture of the woman.
Bertin was a recipient of the Prix de Rome and became a member of the Académie Royale. His approach to history painting often involved theatrical staging and a focus on the emotional state of his subjects. The lighting in this scene directs the viewer's attention to the interaction between the two figures, with the surrounding interior rendered in a manner that suggests a domestic setting of some status. The drapery and the furniture are handled with the attention to texture typical of the period, providing a sense of physical weight to the scene.
This specific print is a photographic reproduction of the original painting, held within the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. It documents the composition as it was understood in the late nineteenth century, complete with the archival markings of the museum and the publishers, Vinkenbos and Dewald. The monochromatic nature of the print emphasises the tonal values and the chiaroscuro effects employed by Bertin in his original oil painting. It offers a clear view of the artist's mastery of anatomy and his ability to convey narrative through gesture and expression. The work remains a representative example of the French academic tradition, where biblical subjects were frequently used to explore human drama and moral conflict.
