A refined eighteenth-century portrait engraving of Joseph Alexandre Blanchard, masterfully executed by Augustin de Saint-Aubin after a design by Charles-Nicolas Cochin.
This portrait engraving depicts Joseph Alexandre Blanchard, a musician and chevalier, presented in a formal profile view. The work is a product of the collaboration between the draughtsman Charles-Nicolas Cochin and the engraver Augustin de Saint-Aubin. Saint-Aubin was a master of the French printmaking tradition during the eighteenth century, known for his technical precision and ability to render textures, such as the powdered wig and the fine lace of the cravat, with remarkable clarity.
The subject is enclosed within a circular frame, a common device in portraiture of the period, which is surmounted by a decorative ribbon. Below the portrait, a stone-effect plinth provides a space for the sitter's name and titles, including his role as Maître de Musique de la Chapelle de sa Majesté. The lettering is executed with the formal elegance characteristic of Enlightenment-era typography.
Saint-Aubin employs a variety of hatching techniques to model the facial features and the volume of the wig. The background within the oval is filled with a fine, regular cross-hatching, which contrasts with the lighter, more fluid lines used to define the sitter's profile. This approach ensures that the focus remains on the individual, while the surrounding elements maintain a sense of balance and order. The print reflects the refined aesthetic of the French court, where portraiture functioned as a means of documenting status and professional identity. The collaboration between Cochin and Saint-Aubin was frequent, and this piece demonstrates their shared commitment to clarity and formal rigour. It remains a clear example of the high level of craftsmanship achieved by French engravers in the late eighteenth century, providing a window into the visual culture of the Ancien Régime.
