A striking 1895 portrait by Gustav Klimt depicting actor Josef Lewinsky, blending theatrical realism with the decorative symbolism of the Vienna Secession.
This portrait depicts the Austrian actor Josef Lewinsky in his role as Carlos in Goethe's play, Clavigo. Painted in 1895, the work demonstrates the transition in Klimt's style from academic realism toward the symbolic and decorative qualities that defined his later career. The composition is divided into three distinct vertical panels, a structural choice that reflects the influence of Japanese woodblock prints on the Vienna Secession movement.
The central panel features Lewinsky standing in a dark, sombre space, dressed in period costume. His figure is rendered with precision, capturing a sense of theatrical gravity. In contrast, the flanking panels introduce ethereal and decorative elements. To the left, delicate golden ivy leaves climb a muted grey background, providing a naturalistic counterpoint to the rigid geometry of the centre. To the right, ghostly, translucent figures emerge from a hazy atmosphere, suggesting the dramatic tension or perhaps the spectral nature of the stage performance. At the base of this right panel, a stylised golden object, reminiscent of a theatrical prop or incense burner, anchors the composition.
The use of gold leaf and flat colour blocks anticipates the artist's later Golden Phase. Klimt balances the stark, realistic depiction of the actor with these abstract, symbolic motifs. The work functions as a study of performance and identity, where the actor is separated from the reality of the stage by the framing devices. By isolating the subject within a dark, narrow corridor, Klimt forces the viewer to focus on the psychological presence of the actor. This piece remains a clear example of the artist's ability to synthesise traditional portraiture with the emerging aesthetic of the turn of the century.
