An eighteenth-century engraving by Alexander Bannerman depicting the Flemish artist Joris Hoefnagel, created for Horace Walpole's historical records.
This engraving by Alexander Bannerman depicts the Flemish painter and miniaturist Joris Hoefnagel. Produced in the mid-eighteenth century, the work is a characteristic example of the period's interest in historical portraiture and biographical documentation. Bannerman, a British engraver, created this plate for Horace Walpole's 'Anecdotes of Painting in England', a publication that sought to catalogue the history of art within the British Isles.
The composition follows the conventions of formal portraiture. Hoefnagel is shown in three-quarter view, dressed in the attire of the late sixteenth century, complete with a ruff and a doublet featuring decorative slashes. He holds a small circular object, likely a miniature or a medal, which references his own profession as a master of small-scale, highly detailed works. Beside him, a classical column and a vase containing a floral arrangement provide a sense of setting. The inclusion of these items reflects the humanist tradition of associating an artist with their intellectual and creative pursuits.
Bannerman employs a precise, linear technique typical of eighteenth-century copperplate engraving. The shading is achieved through a system of cross-hatching and parallel lines, which define the contours of the figure and the texture of the clothing. The background is kept relatively simple, ensuring that the focus remains on the subject. The print is marked with the artist's signature, 'ABannerman Sculp', in the lower right corner of the image area, and the name 'HOEFNAGLE' is inscribed below the frame. This piece offers a clear view into the historical reception of Renaissance artists by later generations of printmakers and collectors.
