A late seventeenth-century portrait of the statesman John Somers by the English painter John Riley, capturing the sitter in a formal Baroque style.
This portrait depicts John Somers, 1st Baron Somers, a prominent English jurist and statesman who served as Lord Chancellor under William III. Painted by John Riley, a London-born artist who became a principal portraitist during the late seventeenth century, the work captures the sitter in a characteristic pose of the period. Riley was known for his ability to render the psychological presence of his subjects, moving away from the more rigid, formalised styles of his predecessors.
The composition utilises a classic oval format, which focuses attention on the sitter's face and the texture of his attire. Somers is shown wearing a voluminous periwig, a fashion essential for the upper classes of the era, and a white lace cravat that provides a stark contrast to his dark coat. The handling of the fabric, particularly the sheen of the blue-grey cloak draped over his shoulder, demonstrates Riley's technical proficiency with oil paint. The background remains dark and indistinct, a common technique in Baroque portraiture to create a sense of depth and to ensure the subject remains the primary focus.
John Riley maintained a successful studio in London and was appointed Painter to the King in 1689. His work often displays a sober, honest approach to portraiture, avoiding the excessive ornamentation found in some continental European styles. This portrait of Somers reflects the professional status of the sitter while maintaining a sense of individual character. The lighting is soft, directed primarily at the face, which allows for subtle modelling of the features. This piece offers a clear view into the aesthetic preferences of the late Stuart period, where portraiture functioned as a means of documenting political and social standing through refined, realistic representation.
