A refined 18th-century Rajput miniature portrait by Dalchand, depicting the nobleman Jhujhar Singh on horseback with an attendant.
This work by the artist Dalchand depicts the nobleman Jhujhar Singh mounted upon a dapple-grey horse. The composition follows the conventions of early 18th-century Rajput portraiture, where the subject is presented in profile against a flat, muted green background. The horse is rendered with careful attention to its musculature and the fine details of its tack, while the rider wears a white jama patterned with small floral motifs, complemented by a vibrant orange sash and quiver. A bearded attendant walks alongside, carrying a bow, which provides a sense of scale and narrative context to the scene.
Dalchand was a painter active at the court of Kishangarh during the reign of Maharaja Raj Singh. His style is characterised by a refined approach to line and a balanced use of colour. The figures are positioned with a sense of poise, typical of the courtly art of the period. The use of gold leaf adds a subtle luminosity to the details of the clothing and the horse's harness, reflecting the status of the sitter. The red border framing the image is a common feature in miniature paintings of this era, serving to contain the scene while providing a visual contrast to the soft tones of the central composition.
This print captures the precision of the original miniature, preserving the delicate brushwork and the specific colour palette employed by the artist. The work offers a view into the aesthetic preferences of the Kishangarh court, where portraiture served to document the appearance and equipment of the nobility. The clarity of the figures against the plain ground allows for a focus on the individual characteristics of the rider and his mount, demonstrating the technical skill involved in traditional Indian miniature painting.
