A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Philips Galle, depicting the biblical encounter between Queen Jezebel and a despondent King Ahab.
This engraving by Philips Galle, after a design by Maerten van Heemskerck, depicts a dramatic scene from the Old Testament. Queen Jezebel approaches King Ahab, who lies in bed, visibly distressed by Naboth's refusal to sell his vineyard. The composition is typical of the mid-sixteenth-century Dutch printmaking tradition, where complex narrative sequences are rendered with precise, controlled line work.
The scene is set within a lavishly decorated interior. Ahab is shown reclining on a bed, his posture conveying his sullen mood. Jezebel, dressed in elaborate, ornate garments, gestures towards him, offering a solution to his grievance. The surrounding figures, including attendants and courtiers, observe the interaction with varied expressions. In the background, through an arched opening, a glimpse of a distant landscape provides a sense of spatial depth, contrasting with the tightly packed figures in the foreground.
Van Heemskerck’s influence is evident in the muscularity of the figures and the architectural details, which reflect the Italianate style he absorbed during his travels. Galle’s technique as an engraver is precise, using hatching and cross-hatching to define the textures of the heavy fabrics, the stone floor, and the shadows within the room. The Latin inscription at the base, 'Ahab ob denegata Vineam Naboth indignabundus decumbit in lecto', identifies the subject matter, confirming the narrative focus on Ahab's indignation. This print is part of a series illustrating the story of Ahab and Jezebel, demonstrating the period's interest in moralising biblical narratives through visual media. The work serves as a fine example of the collaboration between designers and engravers in the Netherlands during the sixteenth century, where technical skill was applied to convey complex human emotions and historical storytelling.
