A fine example of eighteenth-century Mughal miniature painting, depicting a biblical scene through the lens of Indian artistic tradition.
This miniature painting by Mir Kalan Khan depicts the biblical narrative of the young Jesus engaging with scholars. The artist, active in the mid-eighteenth century, demonstrates the synthesis of Mughal artistic traditions with European iconographic influences. The composition is structured around a central figure of Jesus, who is shown kneeling and gesturing towards a group of figures. The architectural setting features a pavilion with arched openings, which frames the scene and provides a sense of depth.
The work is notable for its precise line quality and the application of gold leaf, which adds a luminous quality to the surface. The surrounding border is decorated with a repeating floral motif, a common feature in manuscript illumination of the period. The figures are rendered with attention to their attire and expressions, reflecting the stylistic conventions of the Lucknow or Faizabad courts where Mir Kalan Khan worked. The inclusion of a fountain and flowering trees in the foreground introduces elements of a garden setting, which serves to balance the architectural rigidity of the upper portion of the image.
Mir Kalan Khan was known for his ability to integrate Western perspective and shading techniques into the established Indian miniature format. This piece captures the exchange between the central figure and the surrounding doctors, who are depicted with varied features and postures. The colour palette is carefully managed, using muted tones for the architecture and clothing, which allows the gold accents and the central figure to draw the eye. The work provides a clear example of the cross-cultural exchange occurring in Indian art during the eighteenth century, where European prints and paintings were often used as source material for local artists.
