Childe Hassam, a leading figure in American Impressionism, painted this work in 1912. The composition captures the rugged coastline of the Isles of Shoals, a location off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine that the artist visited frequently throughout his career. Hassam employs a technique of short, broken brushstrokes to convey the movement of light across the water and the texture of the granite rocks.
The palette is dominated by deep blues and bright whites, reflecting the intense sunlight of a summer day. The water, rendered in varying shades of cobalt and navy, contrasts with the stark, sun-bleached rock formations. Small, light-coloured shapes in the water suggest the presence of jellyfish, which provide the title for the piece. These forms are integrated into the overall pattern of light reflections, rather than being depicted as distinct, isolated subjects.
Hassam was deeply influenced by the French Impressionists, particularly Claude Monet, yet he maintained a distinct approach to the American coastal environment.
