A 1793 etching and stipple engraving by Jacques-Louis Copia, depicting the head of the assassinated revolutionary leader Jean-Paul Marat.
This print by Jacques-Louis Copia is a reproduction of the head of Jean-Paul Marat, derived from the iconic painting by Jacques-Louis David, 'The Death of Marat'. Executed in 1793, the year of the revolutionary leader's assassination, this work captures the subject in his final moments. The composition focuses exclusively on the head, which is wrapped in a cloth bandage, tilted at an angle that suggests the stillness of death.
Copia employs a combination of etching and stipple engraving to achieve a range of tonal values. The cross-hatching and dot-work create a sense of volume and shadow, particularly across the neck and the contours of the face. The background is a dark, stippled field that pushes the figure forward, creating a stark contrast. The framing includes the text 'A MARAT L'AMI DU PEUPLE DAVID' within the corners of the octagonal border, reinforcing the political context of the original image. Below the image, the inscription 'Ne pouvant le corrompre, ils l'ont assassiné' (Unable to corrupt him, they assassinated him) serves as a direct political statement, reflecting the propaganda efforts of the period.
As a printmaker, Copia was skilled at translating the painterly qualities of David's work into the linear language of engraving. This piece functions as a historical document of the French Revolution, illustrating how visual imagery was disseminated to shape public perception of political figures. The technical precision of the engraving allows for a clear view of the subject's expression, which remains calm and composed despite the violent circumstances of his demise. This print is a representative example of how Neoclassical artists utilised portraiture to convey moral and political narratives during a time of significant social upheaval in France.
