A detailed mezzotint portrait of Admiral James Saumarez, 1st Baron de Saumarez, by the skilled British engraver Charles Turner, published in 1824.
This mezzotint by Charles Turner depicts James Saumarez, 1st Baron de Saumarez, a prominent British naval officer who served during the Napoleonic Wars. Turner, a master of the mezzotint process, utilised the technique to achieve a soft, tonal quality that mimics the appearance of oil painting. The medium relies on the roughening of the copper plate to create deep blacks and subtle gradations of grey, which allows for the realistic rendering of the Admiral's uniform and the atmospheric background.
The portrait captures the subject in his later years, wearing the formal attire of a high-ranking naval officer. The composition focuses on the sitter's face, which is illuminated against a darker, indistinct backdrop. This approach directs the viewer's attention to the character and expression of the Admiral. The fine details of the epaulettes, the sash, and the cravat demonstrate the technical precision required in nineteenth-century printmaking. Such prints were often produced to document the appearance of public figures for a wider audience, serving as a visual record of the naval leadership of the era.
Charles Turner was a prolific engraver who worked closely with many of the leading painters of his time. His ability to translate the brushwork of an original painting into the medium of print made him a sought-after collaborator. This specific work was published in London in 1824, reflecting the period's interest in naval history and the documentation of military figures. The print remains a clear example of the technical capabilities of the mezzotint process during the early nineteenth century, providing a window into the aesthetic preferences of the Regency and Georgian periods. The work is presented here as a museum-grade reproduction, maintaining the tonal depth and clarity of the original impression.
