This drawing by Rembrandt van Rijn depicts the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. It is one of a series of sketches the artist produced after viewing Mughal miniature paintings that had reached the Dutch Republic through the Dutch East India Company. Rembrandt was fascinated by the exotic attire, the specific iconography of power, and the different approach to line and form present in these Eastern works.
In this study, Rembrandt captures the Emperor in profile, a standard convention in Mughal portraiture. The figure stands with a sword, wearing a turban and a long tunic, with a faint halo behind his head to denote his imperial status. Rembrandt employs his characteristic pen and ink technique, using fluid lines to define the contours of the robes and the facial features. He applies brown wash to create depth and shadow, though he maintains a lighter touch than in his typical European subjects. The background is kept simple, allowing the focus to remain on the figure of the ruler.
