A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Salomon Italia depicting the biblical scene of Jacob's Dream, featuring fine line work and classical composition.
This etching by Salomon Italia depicts the biblical narrative of Jacob's Dream, a subject frequently explored in seventeenth-century European art. The composition centres on the figure of Jacob, who lies in a state of repose upon the lower steps of a ladder that ascends into the celestial realm. Italia employs a distinct etching technique, utilising fine, parallel hatching to define the forms of the angels and the architectural structure of the ladder. The figures of the angels, rendered with soft features and expansive wings, occupy the space around the sleeping patriarch, creating a sense of divine presence within the frame.
Salomon Italia, an artist of Jewish heritage active in Amsterdam, is recognised for his contributions to the illustration of Hebrew texts, including the Esther scrolls. His work often displays a synthesis of traditional narrative themes and the stylistic conventions of the Dutch Golden Age. In this particular print, the artist manages the interplay of light and shadow through the density of his line work, providing a sense of volume to the drapery and the clouds that flank the scene. The vertical orientation of the ladder serves to guide the viewer's eye upward, reinforcing the connection between the earthly and the divine. The inclusion of the number 87 in the lower corner suggests this print was part of a larger series or a comprehensive illustrated volume. The work demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of Italia's output, where the economy of line is used to convey complex theological subject matter with clarity and directness. This print remains a representative example of the intersection between religious iconography and the printmaking traditions of the mid-seventeenth century.
