A detailed eighteenth-century engraving by Jakob Folkema depicting Jacoba, Duchess of Bavaria, framed within an architectural niche with symbolic motifs.
This engraving by the Dutch artist Jakob Folkema depicts Jacoba, Duchess of Bavaria and Countess of Holland, in a formal, devotional pose. The composition is structured as a trompe-l'oeil niche, framing the subject within a stone-like architectural border. Jacoba is shown in profile, her hands clasped in prayer, wearing a traditional headdress and a gown trimmed with ermine. The inclusion of a coat of arms to her left and symbolic elements, such as the heart pierced by an arrow and the pair of doves above, adds layers of iconographic meaning to the portrait.
Below the central portrait, a cartouche contains a smaller, narrative scene depicting a marriage ceremony. This secondary image provides historical context to the life of the Duchess, rendered with the same precision as the primary portrait. Folkema, a skilled engraver active in the eighteenth century, demonstrates technical mastery in his use of cross-hatching and stippling to create texture and depth. The play of light across the fabric of the gown and the stone architecture suggests a high level of attention to material qualities.
This print is based on an earlier painting by Jan Mostaert, reflecting the common practice of reproducing historical portraits through engraving to ensure their wider circulation. The work is characteristic of the period, where portraiture often incorporated symbolic motifs to communicate the status and virtues of the sitter. The clean lines and balanced composition demonstrate the technical rigour expected of Dutch printmakers during this era. The print serves as a record of both the historical figure of Jacoba and the aesthetic preferences of the eighteenth-century audience who collected such works.
