A sixteenth-century Flemish drawing depicting the biblical struggle between Jacob and an angel, rendered in fluid pen and ink.
This drawing depicts the biblical account of Jacob wrestling with an angel, a narrative found in the Book of Genesis. Attributed to the Master of the Months of Lucas, an anonymous Flemish artist active during the early sixteenth century, the work reflects the stylistic conventions of the Northern Renaissance. The composition focuses on the physical struggle between the two figures, rendered with fluid, calligraphic pen strokes that define the musculature and the flowing drapery of their garments.
In the background, the artist provides a secondary narrative layer. A caravan of camels and attendants moves across the terrain, contextualising the scene within Jacob's journey. The inclusion of these animals and the distant topographical features demonstrates the artist's interest in spatial depth, even within a monochromatic ink medium. The line work is precise, showing a clear command of form and movement. The figures are positioned in the foreground, creating a sense of immediate action, while the secondary elements are sketched with lighter pressure to suggest distance.
The Master of the Months of Lucas is known for a series of designs depicting the labours of the months, which share this same graphic sensibility. This drawing demonstrates the characteristic approach of the period, where religious subjects were often integrated with detailed, observational elements of daily life or travel. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the historical character of the piece. The work is a study in narrative economy, using minimal ink to convey a complex theological and physical encounter. It remains a clear example of the graphic traditions prevalent in the Low Countries during the early sixteenth century, prioritising clarity of line and narrative legibility over atmospheric effects.
