A characterful 1920 portrait by George Luks, depicting the Burke brothers in theatrical costumes with bold, expressive brushwork.
George Luks, a member of the group known as The Eight, painted this double portrait of the Burke brothers in 1920. The work demonstrates his characteristic approach to portraiture, which prioritises the energy of the subjects over formal academic precision. Luks employs a direct, painterly technique, using broad brushstrokes to define the figures of the two boys dressed in theatrical, clown-like costumes.
The composition focuses on the interaction between the brothers, who are depicted in matching outfits of red and yellow. The colour palette is dominated by these warm, saturated tones, which create a sense of immediacy and playfulness. Luks captures the distinct expressions of the children, with one boy smiling broadly while the other maintains a more reserved, steady gaze. The background remains largely indistinct, allowing the figures to occupy the primary space of the canvas. A small table with fruit sits to the left, providing a subtle domestic context to the otherwise staged appearance of the sitters.
Luks was known for his interest in the everyday life of urban dwellers, often finding his subjects in the streets and tenements of New York. While this portrait depicts children in costume, it retains the artist's preference for raw, unvarnished characterisation. The application of paint is confident and rapid, reflecting the influence of his earlier career as a newspaper illustrator. This work provides a view into the artist's ability to balance technical spontaneity with a clear sense of individual personality. The print captures the texture of the original oil application, preserving the vigour of the brushwork and the warmth of the palette.
