A powerful historical painting by Ilya Repin depicting the tragic aftermath of a fatal confrontation between Tsar Ivan IV and his son.
Ilya Repin painted this work between 1883 and 1885. It depicts a moment of historical tragedy: the aftermath of a fatal blow struck by Tsar Ivan IV against his son, the Tsarevich Ivan Ivanovich. The composition focuses on the psychological state of the Tsar, whose face displays a mixture of shock, grief, and madness as he clutches his dying son. The Tsarevich appears limp, his eyes fixed in a vacant stare, while blood flows from a wound on his temple.
Repin utilised a dark, atmospheric interior to frame the figures. The room is dimly lit, with the light source directed towards the two men, which draws the viewer into the centre of the scene. The floor is covered in a patterned red carpet, which contrasts with the dark, muted tones of the background. An overturned chair and a discarded staff lie nearby, suggesting the suddenness of the violence that occurred moments before. The painting is noted for its realism and its unflinching portrayal of human emotion.
As a member of the Peredvizhniki, or Wanderers, Repin sought to bring art to the public by depicting themes from Russian history and social life. This work is one of his most recognised historical compositions. It demonstrates his ability to capture complex emotional states through precise brushwork and a controlled palette. The painting remains in the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, where it has been housed since its acquisition. The work is a study of power, regret, and the fragility of life, presented with a technical mastery that defines Repin's contribution to nineteenth-century Russian art.
