Giorgio de Chirico is primarily recognised for his invention of Metaphysical Art, a style defined by dreamlike, uncanny urban spaces. However, his career also included periods of engagement with traditional subjects, such as this depiction of the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. Painted during his later years, this work demonstrates a shift toward a more classical, painterly approach, moving away from the stark, empty plazas of his earlier output.
The composition presents the iconic Venetian island as a static, almost theatrical set piece.
