Beskrivning
A detailed woodblock print from Hiroshige's famous Tōkaidō series, depicting the busy Ishiyakushi station with travellers and packhorses.
Utagawa Hiroshige produced this woodblock print as part of his series, The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō. This specific work represents Ishiyakushi, the forty-fourth station on the coastal road connecting Edo and Kyoto. The composition focuses on the logistical activity of the post station. In the foreground, several labourers prepare packhorses for the next leg of the journey. They adjust straw sandals on the animals and secure heavy wooden crates. The figures are depicted with a sense of movement, capturing the physical effort involved in nineteenth-century travel.
To the left, a thatched building functions as a rest stop or administrative office. Figures sit inside, surrounded by papers and notices posted on the walls. The artist uses a diagonal arrangement to guide the viewer through the scene, from the architectural structure on the left toward the open space on the right. The background features a soft green slope and a dark sky, achieved through the traditional bokashi technique of graduated colour. This method creates a sense of atmosphere and distance without the use of Western linear perspective.
Hiroshige was known for his ability to capture the atmosphere of travel in Japan. Unlike earlier ukiyo-e artists who focused on actors or courtesans, Hiroshige prioritised the experience of the common traveller and the changing weather. This print belongs to the Hoeidō edition, which is the most famous version of the series. The inclusion of text in the upper right provides the station name and a short poem, a common feature in Japanese landscape prints of this period. The poem adds a literary layer to the visual information, connecting the physical location to cultural associations.
The use of colour in this print is balanced, with the earthy tones of the thatch and horses contrasting against the cool greens and blues of the environment. The fine lines of the woodblock carving define the textures of the straw and the horses' coats. This work is a clear example of the ukiyo-e genre's shift toward landscape and daily life during the late Edo period.
