Dong Qichang, a central figure in late Ming dynasty art theory and practice, produced this ink wash handscroll in 1611. The work reflects the aesthetic values of the literati tradition, which prioritised personal expression and scholarly detachment over strict representational accuracy. The composition employs a series of rhythmic, dry brush strokes to construct the mountainous terrain and sparse vegetation, characteristic of Dong's mature style.

The scene depicts a secluded retreat, a common theme in Chinese painting that explores the ideal of withdrawal from public life into nature. Dong uses varying densities of ink to create a sense of atmospheric depth, moving from the foreground structures to the distant, rolling hills.
